Vancouver Island bore the brunt of the storm, experiencing hurricane-force winds reaching up to 170 km/h. The severe weather caused significant damage, including downed trees on power lines and road blockages.

One of the hardest-hit areas was the province of Nanaimo, where efforts to restore power were hampered by persistent winds. At the height of the storm, approximately 270,000 households experienced power outages across B.C. The intensity of the storm was compared to that of a major hurricane, though the storm itself did not make landfall and was centered over the ocean.

BC Ferries was forced to suspend operations for part of the day due to the massive waves generated by the storm. Despite the challenges, authorities emphasized the importance of balancing public movement with safety. Tragically, the storm claimed lives in the United States, with two women in Washington state killed by falling trees.

The bomb cyclone is characterized by a rapid drop in atmospheric pressure, making it a rare but intense event on the west coast. Experts caution against linking the storm directly to climate change without further study, although there is evidence that such weather patterns are moving further north.



'Bomb cyclone' rips through B.C., thousands without power

The wind was howling when this tree crashed clear across Chris Dixon's roof. We couldn't hear the crack over the sound of the wind and it was just the ceiling coming in. My first thought was to you know cover my wife and get her to the basement. But yeah it was definitely scary and we're lucky. The storm hit hardest on Vancouver Island. Trees fell on power lines and blocked roads. For us here it's it's the worst that we've had. We've had other bad storms but as far as trees down this is the worst. At one point 270,000 households lost power throughout the province. There were problems across the grid. Check out this surge in downtown Vancouver. The storm peaked at night but persistent wind throughout the day complicated efforts to get the power back up and running. Given the intensity of the storm which we could all hear and see I suspect it's going to be a while before things are back to quote-unquote normal in Nanaimo. The weather pattern is called a bomb cyclone. It happens when pressure drops fast. The pressure in the center of the storm was similar to what we'd expect to see in a major category three or category four hurricane. We don't see that off the west coast. Off northern Vancouver Island wind gusts were measured at 170 kilometers an hour. That creates massive waves. BC ferries didn't sail for much of the morning. We need to make these decisions to really balance how do we keep people moving but how do we keep them safe? In the United States the storm was deadly. Two women in Washington state were killed by falling trees. One while taking a shower. One in a homeless encampment. As bad as this was, Adrienne, the center of the storm was actually out over the ocean. It did not make landfall so things could have been much worse. And Lindsay, you know the question that always comes up with a storm like this is is how, if at all, is this linked to climate change? Well it's too soon to make an official link. It certainly will be studied. This is different from a hurricane. We know with those storms they are intensified because of warmer water. Bomb cyclones haven't been studied as much although there is evidence that patterns like this are moving further north. All right, Lindsay Duncombe in Vancouver.
