The Toronto Blue Jays are one win away from a World Series title and that would be cause for celebration at San Diego State. ABC 10 News Sports Director Ben Higgins digs into why Jays infielder Ty France was one of Tony Gwynn's favorite Aztecs. Ty and I have a great relationship. He's really one of the last guys that got a chance to learn something from my pops as a hitter. That's Tony Gwynn Jr., who was already a big league outfielder when Ty France was recruited to play baseball by his dad at San Diego State. Under Gwynn's coaching, France played his first two seasons on the Mesa, becoming one of the top hitters on the West Coast, before Tony Sr. passed away from cancer at the end of his sophomore season. My dad loved Ty. He was certainly, just in having conversations when he was talking about his team, I don't know that there was a conversation where Ty's name didn't come up. One year later, France followed in Tony Gwynn's footsteps when he was drafted in the 34th round by the Padres, eventually making his Major League debut in 2019. But it all traces back to his time at San Diego State. I mean, he was their best hitter. He had a style that my dad gravitated to and really tried to help him cultivate what he's become now. In 2020, the Padres traded France to Seattle, where he became a lineup regular and an all-star. Five years later, he's continuing his career as a bat off the bench for the Blue Jays. Probably a little bit harder for him. He spent about three, four years playing almost every day. Still, France remained at the ready in the World Series, contributing an RBI groundout in the 7th inning in a Game 4 win over the Dodgers, and he had plenty of Aztecs alums cheering him on from San Diego. I take great pride in it, and so when he got in the game, you know, I was already rooting for the Blue Jays anyway. They just kind of made it a lot easier that there's a familiar face and someone that I want to see have some success. It's now been more than a decade since Tony Gwynn last coached here at the stadium that bears his name, but his legacy lives on. At San Diego State, I'm Ben Higgins, ABC 10 News.
