A congressional warning has been issued regarding scams that target Super Bowl LX fans, ranging from bogus tickets and counterfeit merchandise to fraudulent sports betting schemes. According to the American Gaming Association, Americans are expected to wager a record $1.76 billion on the event, increasing the risk of scams.

Experts advise fans to use only U.S.-based, regulated sportsbooks and to avoid responding to unsolicited messages offering inside betting information. For ticket purchases, consumers are urged to buy only from well-known vendors and to be cautious of prices significantly below market value, as these are likely scams. Verifying website URLs and avoiding the sharing of sensitive information are also emphasized as key protective measures.

CBS News has an exclusive look at a congressional warning about scams targeting Super Bowl fans. It ranges from bogus tickets to counterfeit merchandise and even sports betting. According to the American Gaming Association, Americans will wager a record $1.76 billion on this year's Super Bowl alone. Joining us now is CBS News national correspondent, Usha Qureshi, who has our first look at the report and how to protect yourself from these scams. Good to see you. Good to see you guys. Now, look, if you're going to wager, you've got to be careful, right? One of the first things that we say is, you know, if you're going to put a bet on, stick with U.S.-based sportsbooks, right? I mean, there's all these so-called offshore sportsbooks, but they're not regulated. And so, you know, gamblers have little recourse if the odds are rigged or the funds are stolen. So you've got to be careful about where you're placing these bets. One of the other things that you've got to watch out for is don't respond to messages or social media posts that are claiming that they have inside betting information. That is most certainly fake. That is most certainly fake. Right, exactly. Don't trust anybody. That's what I say. And, you know, surprisingly, these are generally going to be fake and they're going to be looking for personal information, like your bank account information. And again, this goes for anything when you're talking about, especially when you're talking about wagering online, is, you know, there are a lot of attempts to steal your personal information. So don't share your bank account information. Don't share your social security number. And you know, also make sure that the site is real. We've actually seen cases where scammers are creating, mimicking real sites legitimately. They function, look exactly like the real thing, but they are fake. And so you've got to double check that URL before you place any wagers. So what about fake tickets? I mean, that to me, in almost everything that I do, is of concern because you buy tickets third party, you buy them on different like sites. And how do you know if you're getting a legit one or not, especially if you pay a lot of money? And when they look so similar sometimes. Exactly. Exactly. Well, one of the things we looked around, right? And right now, the cheapest tickets we're finding right now online are about $5,000. The cheapest? The cheapest. Right? So use that as a baseline. I guess we're staying home. Yeah. Stay home. Stay home. But I mean, that's a good, it's a good deterrent, right? Not to get scammed. As you see those prices and you know, what we're hearing from the congressional committee is that scammers are offering very low price tickets. So if you see anything well below $5,000 and that seems too good to be true, guess what? It probably is too good to be true and you should probably stay away from it. Now this seems obvious, but only buy from well-known websites like the NFL's website, you know, legitimate vendors that we're used to, Ticketmaster, StubHub, SeatGeek. And when you go to those sites, type in the web address yourself and make sure you spell everything correctly. Scammers like to change a letter or a number in the URL and that'll take you to a site that could compromise your transaction. And sometimes people would put those in and go to the scam sites and they, Oh, they realize it's a scam site. Just double check that URL, clear your cache and put it in again. Okay.
