Interim leader Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel laureate, unveiled a declaration recognizing the protests in a revised constitution to be adopted by the next elected government. He also announced that general elections are scheduled for February 2026. While some reforms have been implemented, including the closure of secret detention centers and the establishment of commissions, concerns remain about political tension, violence, and impunity. The country continues to recover from the violence of the protests, with many still affected by the trauma.

We are celebrating the fall of the fascist regime and we have not forgotten the memories of the July uprising. On Tuesday, as thousands gathered outside the national parliament, interim leader and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus unveiled the July declaration, announcing full state and constitutional recognition of last year's protests under a revised constitution to be adopted by the next elected government. And later he announced the date for the upcoming general elections in a televised speech. On behalf of the interim government, I will send a letter to the chief election commissioner requesting that the election commission make arrangements to hold the national election in February 2026, before the upcoming Ramadan. The interim government led by Professor Yunus promised a new era of justice and democracy. Protest groups at Bangladesh's reform aren't enough. Although secret detention centers are shut, commissions are in place, economy is relatively stable, arbitrary arrest, mob violence, political tension and impunity remain major concerns. According to the UN, around 1,400 people were killed and thousands more wounded in the protests between July and August of 2024. Many are still recovering from their injuries and national trauma that Bangladesh is still struggling to heal from. Overall, we are doing very well, but I'm not sure what will happen after the next election. We are facing some obstacles now, but we will overcome them.
