The number of malnourished children in the Gaza strip is rising at an alarming rate. According to the United Nations, over 5,000 children were admitted for treatment for acute malnutrition in May alone, a near 50 percent increase from April.

Hospitals in Gaza are facing a surge in malnourished children as access to baby milk remains severely limited. According to UNICEF, the number of children under five treated for acute malnutrition more than doubled from January to May, with over 5,000 cases reported in May alone. The World Health Organization states that 112 children are admitted daily for malnutrition, and 57 children have died in the past four months. 

Mothers are struggling to feed their infants due to both the scarcity of baby milk and widespread nutritional deficiencies among pregnant women. Aid operations under Israeli control have not alleviated the shortage, leaving many newborns at risk as hospitals become overwhelmed with desperate families.

The close borders and lack of access to baby milk are a war crime, especially against our children. A controversial humanitarian aid operation for Gaza was set up in May under the control of Israel. But baby milk, essential for the growth of newborns, is almost impossible to find. In this hospital, the paediatric unit is overwhelmed with desperate mothers and their malnourished children. Because of this war, the state of children's health is worrying and their diet is disastrous. This threatens the lives of many children. According to UNICEF, 2,300 children under five were treated for acute malnutrition in January. In May, that doubled to 5,119. Today Amal comes to this hospital in the hope of saving her three-month-old daughter, who needs nutritional supplements and water because she's stopped growing. When my baby girl was born, she weighed 1.9 kilos. And now she's down to 1.8 kilos and she's still losing weight. I breastfeed her, but it's no use. Because nutritional deficiencies are widespread among pregnant women in Gaza, there are not enough calories or nutrients in breastfeeding to feed newborns like baby Rafeef. Babies need a tin of powdered milk every three to four days. But in reality, we can't meet their needs. They only get one can of powdered milk every 20 days. According to the World Health Organization, 112 children are admitted to hospital every day for malnutrition. In the last four months, 57 children have died.
