Skiing with a disability may not be easy, but it's not impossible. A club in the town of Schladming shows us how it’s done.

In Schladming, Austria, the non-profit PSO Active is working to make skiing accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities. The organization provides specialized equipment, such as sit skis and adaptive attachments, and offers tailored instruction to help participants enjoy the slopes safely and independently.

The program highlights the importance of improvisation in accessibility and relies on donations to ensure cost is not a barrier. Participants, including children and adults with disabilities, are able to experience the joy of skiing, with the only significant limitation being funding for the necessary equipment and support.

Austria: Making skiing accessible

Andreas speeds down the slopes with help from ski instructor Stefan. The 27-year-old has several disabilities and has undergone many operations. But nothing has taken away her joy for skiing. The Austrian non-profit PSO Active offers skiing classes for people with a wide range of disabilities and provides special equipment like Andreas' ski seat. Regular skiing is very difficult because you have to think about every move. But in a sit ski I can just steer with my upper body. I give commands for the turns like and left and right so we have the same rhythm. I don't really feel anything from Andrea anymore because she's gotten so good at it. Let's hit the black slope. The steep ski run itself isn't a challenge, though the chairlift is. But that doesn't mean Andrea can't use it. The gondola is tricky too, but Andrea can board it using a device on wheels. Increasing accessibility means improvising. That's important, because you can't always standardize everything. Raimund Karl and his son Felix are about to hit the slopes as well. These special ski attachments allow the eight-year-old with Down syndrome to glide down with minimal assistance. Rather than hold Felix between his legs, his dad can gently guide him downhill. You need to be very sensitive and focused on the child, but then practice makes perfect. In Schladming, they believe skiing is possible with almost any disability. The only real limitation is funding. The non-profit depends on donations so that inclusive skiing isn't a question of money. And the reward is an experience that's simply priceless.
