"The feeling of flying in a boat and rescuing people is like no other," says a girl training with her rescuer mother ahead of International Women's Day. Women of the Bondi Beach rescue crew in Australia have launched their annual 'Pink Patrol' to inspire the next generation with their sharp skills and bravery.

It's a sunny morning on Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach. Veteran lifesavers Nixie Cright and Christy Smith sprint through the surf and leap into their inflatable rescue boat, or IRB, as quick as they can. They're passing on their experience to the next generation of women rescuers. In the case of Christy and her daughter Char, quite literally. It's a really lovely experience to watch your kids watch you and mentor your kids and then I'd never forced her into doing it she just wanted to do it so she said to me one day I want to race with you I want to do it and I love it and she recently told me that the feeling of flying in a boat and rescuing people is like no other. I mean it means everything because it's like I can really establish a relationship with her and I feel really close when I'm on patrol with her. Women were excluded from Australia's surf rescue force until 1980. Now they make up almost half of the volunteers. After 12 years on patrol, Nixie Cright says the only difference between her and her male colleagues is that she can't cut corners when it comes to her craft. We have to work a lot more on our technique as the men can pull a little bit most, can pull a little bit more on their strength if something goes a little bit wrong but the women have to get that technique right so that if we're technically right we can always get things done. In the lead-up to Women's Day, the Bondi Beach crew ran its annual Pink Patrol to highlight their brave work on the choppy waters and to inspire more women to follow in their sandy footsteps.
