A major atmospheric river is expected to impact the U.S. West Coast over the next several days, with the heaviest effects centered from Northern California through Oregon and into Washington State. Rainfall totals could reach 8 to 12 inches in some areas, and persistent precipitation is likely to continue throughout the week.

Higher elevations are forecast to receive beneficial snow, creating a solid base for the season. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, especially in Northern California, as the ongoing rain and snow may lead to travel disruptions and other weather-related issues by midweek.

This week, next seven days. Really, it's the next couple of days that we're looking at anywhere from a Category 2 to Category 4 there. Centered from Northern California up into Oregon, even Category 3, and then up into Washington State. More in the order of a Category 2. So let's bring in this moisture this weekend. I think that's manageable, but then we get to midweek. We start to see more of that moisture in the plume that's persistently pointed at the Pacific Northwest and that's going to add up over the days. In fact, we could see some areas 8 to 12 inches of rain. That's why we're watching very closely in Northern California. The snow is part of this too. It is that time of year. We bring it up and over those higher elevations and that's going to result in some beneficial snow. A nice base for a lot of these higher elevations. Now we're just waiting for the next one to arrive. That's going to start late Monday. See the snow falling at those higher mountain passes. Just be prepared if you have to travel over those and then down towards Eureka, California, where we're going to see persistent rain pretty much throughout the week with not too much of a break. Kelly, and that's why we're concerned by around midweek that we could be seeing some problems.
