Sanpete County authorities are nearing an arrest in the arson case at the home of County Attorney Kevin Daniels. The attack occurred when a fire was set on the family's front porch, with Daniels, his wife, and three children inside. The family was alerted by their dog and Daniels' son, allowing Daniels to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived. Vandalism, including a swastika, was also found on the property.

Investigators credit security camera footage and extensive police work for recent breakthroughs. The motive is believed to be connected to Daniels' role as a prosecutor. Two five-gallon jugs of gasoline and a road flare were used in the attack. Authorities are awaiting crime lab results and anticipate an arrest soon, noting that such incidents are unprecedented in the area.

that had some breakthroughs to the case, is what I'll say. We do have some people that are still of interest. I may dare say even someone that are suspects in the case. Sanpete County Deputy Attorney Wes Mangum speaking to me Wednesday from his office in Manti on the arson investigation at the home of County Attorney Kevin Daniels. There's been some ring cameras that have helped at least point law enforcement in the right direction. It was 3 a.m. July 16th when a fire was started on the Daniels family front porch. Their family dog started barking and Daniel's son up playing video games at the time, saw a flash of light waking his father who used a garden hose to extinguish the flames before firefighters could arrive. Does have effects on them as far as laying their head on their pillow at nighttime. Is, are we gonna be woke up again? Is somebody gonna come again? Daniels, his wife and three young children were inside the home at the time. A swastika and vandalism were also found on their garage and SUV. Mangum credited Ephraim City Police and their relentless work on this. Going door to door like they've done, seeing if anybody caught anything, going to businesses, having security camera footage reviewed, really taking the time to look at the timeframe of when this allegedly happened and seeing what is seen during that time. Believing it's work he does here at the Sanpete County Courthouse in Manti that led to this attack. Saying something like this is unprecedented here. We do believe that there is a connection there. He's prosecuted somebody and either convicted them of crimes, you know, put them behind bars at a certain point in time or maybe many times. That's the motive that we can speculate on right now. And so, especially when it's related to work, you know, prosecuting and holding people accountable for what they do when they violate the law and break the law. A lot of times people may be upset about that. The prosecutor says two five gallon jugs of gas were lit with a road flare. They're awaiting results from the crime lab but believe they're close to making an arrest. There's not been anything that has happened, you know, like this in our area, in our jurisdiction. And I don't recall around the state of Utah where a prosecutor, at least recently, has been personally targeted or his home attacked. Fortunately, across the country, public officials have been, it's been more prevalent for them to be targeted. And hopefully we can do some things to make that change.
