Staff have engaged in strikes and demonstrations, citing over 200 resignations and the loss of qualified personnel to the private sector, as inflation continues to rise.

Families of patients have joined protests, expressing concern for children who rely on the hospital for care they cannot access elsewhere. Despite ongoing demonstrations, the government has maintained its position, leading to department closures and reduced on-call services. The situation at Garrahan is seen as indicative of broader cuts to Argentina's public health and welfare systems.

It's rare to see the corridors of the Garahan, one of Latin America's largest paediatric hospitals located in Buenos Aires, empty. But for more than a month, its workers have been alternating between strikes and demonstrations to protest against a decision by the government of Javier Milay to freeze its budget. At the same time, inflation in Argentina is soaring to over 130%. Today the poverty line is 720 euros and I only get paid 540. It's impossible to meet our most basic needs, so we've already had over 200 resignations. We are losing highly qualified staff to the private sector. Demonstrations take place several times a week in front of the paediatric hospital, as on Sunday, when families of patients came to show their support with a caravan of bicycles. The Garahan receives sick children from all over the country. Many of them would not be able to access private care. This is the case of Amorina, who is autistic and has kidney cancer. This is our second home, a shelter, almost like family. I don't know where we would take our daughter without the Garahan, where we could go. I can't imagine this country without this hospital. Yet it is the very survival of the hospital that is at stake. After a month of protests, the government continues to be inflexible, refusing to send the hospital more funding. It's trying to exhaust its opponents. The staff can no longer live with dignity. Entire departments are closing, on-call duty is being cut back. We can't go on like this for long, even though the Garahan is a beacon, a benchmark for public health in Argentina and throughout the continent. Javier Milai repeats it regularly. He came to power to destroy the state, and that's what he is doing. It's not just the Garahan hospital, but public health care, public universities and the pension system. Argentina's welfare state, a distinguishing feature of the Argentina model in Latin America, is being dismembered.

It was not clear if Hamas’ statement meant it had accepted the proposal from US President Donald Trump for a 60-day ceasefire.
