As Moscow and Washington discuss ending the war in Ukraine, one question on investors' minds is whether the corporate exodus from Russia in opposition to the February 2022 invasion of its neighbor may be reversed.

As discussions unfold around a potential resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, speculation has arisen regarding the potential return of Western brands to the Russian market. In the aftermath of the conflict, over 1,000 brands exited Russia, often selling or abandoning assets. Some companies found their holdings seized by the Russian state, leading to forced sales. A Reuters analysis reported last year that Russian companies acknowledged $107 billion in losses due to write-downs and lost revenue. Among these cases was Reynolds selling its assets for a mere one cent to Russian carmaker Avtovaz in 2022, with a residual cost of $1.3 billion to reacquire a majority stake.

The first meeting in years between senior U.S. and Russian officials occurred recently. Following this, Russia's international investment envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, suggested that some U.S. companies might return as early as the second quarter. However, he offered no specific details. While financial and energy services remain restricted due to sanctions, Dmitriev mentioned that non-sanctioned sectors like retail and food production could see a return. Despite statements suggesting possible reentry of financial service providers like Visa and MasterCard, current sanctions still preclude such services.

Within Russia, Western brand replacements have already taken root. For example, McDonald's restaurants have commenced operations under new local branding, while Starbucks is now known as Star's Coffee. Some Russian consumers have expressed nostalgia for Western brands, citing the quality and variety that once existed. Yet, others have embraced homegrown alternatives, noting comparable quality and supporting local production. The landscape for automotive manufacturers, particularly, has shifted significantly, with Chinese brands significantly increasing their market dominance.

Russia's recent acceleration in seizing assets linked to foreign ownership adds another layer of complexity for potential Western re-engagement. After the war commenced, numerous companies justified their withdrawal from Russia by condemning the invasion of Ukraine. If an agreement ends the conflict with territorial concessions to Russia, companies must consider potential reputational consequences before re-entering the Russian market.



Are Western brands weighing a return to Russia, if the war ends?

As U.S. President Donald Trump pushes for a quick end to the war in Ukraine, investors are speculating whether Western brands could or would want to return to Russia, once considered a high-growth market. More than 1,000 brands have left Russia in the last three years, some by selling or abandoning assets. Others have their assets seized by the Russian state and a sale forced through. Russian companies have acknowledged losses totaling $107 billion in write-downs and lost revenue, according to a Reuters analysis a year ago. Reynolds sold its assets for just one cent in 2022 to Russia's top carmaker, Avtovaz, and would have to pay at least $1.3 billion if it wants to buy back its majority stake, Avtovaz has said. After senior U.S. and Russian officials met on February 18 for the first time since the war, Russia's special international investment envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, said he expects some U.S. companies to return as early as the second quarter, though he gave no details. The most likely to return are those who fall outside sanctions, such as retailers and food producers, while Dmitriev said he believed U.S. oil majors that had been successful in Russia would return, quote, at some point. A senior Russian lawmaker has said Visa and MasterCard would soon restore payment services, but, for now, sanctions bar financial or related energy services from being offered to Russia. Some of the world's most popular brands have been replaced by Russian imitations. The more than 800 McDonald's restaurants in the country now operate under a local brand. And Starbucks is now called Star's Coffee under new Russian owners. Some locals say they have missed Western brands. It is very much felt. For example, Uniqlo, where one could buy basic T-shirts. I'm talking about a budget-friendly segment where most people shop. McDonald's got worse. There are no potato wedges anymore. But others say it's been great for homegrown products. Our local brands produce things that are absolutely no worse than Western ones. Car makers may have a harder chance of getting a foothold again. Chinese rivals now have more than half of the market share, up from less than 10 percent three years ago. Russia controls a handful of Western companies under the guise of temporary management. This year, it has quickened its pace in seizing assets of companies with links to foreign ownership. It may take more convincing for investors to return. Shortly after the invasion, hundreds of brands issued statements condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine. That framed their exit or suspension of business in moral terms. If a deal to end the war rewards Russia with Ukrainian territory, those companies will risk reputational damage by returning.
