Apple has increased production of iPhones in India as part of efforts to manage the impact of tariffs affecting its China-based supply chain. According to information from CNBC, Apple has outlined a strategy in which iPhones sold in the United States will be sourced from India, while other products such as Macs, AirPods, and watches will come from Vietnam. China is expected to continue supplying other global markets.

This shift in manufacturing strategy comes as Apple responds to tariffs and seeks to diversify its supply chain following disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these changes, Apple has not committed to manufacturing iPhones in the United States, which has been a key objective of the Trump administration.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has made several gestures toward the administration, including a $1 million donation to the presidential inauguration and opening a factory in Houston to produce AI servers. However, these actions have not fully met the administration's expectations or satisfied some investors. Apple is the only company among the so-called 'Mag 7' group to have seen a decline in stock performance since early April, a trend attributed to tariff impacts and delays in technology updates such as the AI-enhanced Siri.

Yeah, Tim Cook may not be in the Middle East with President Trump and his big tech peers, but he's certainly on the president's mind, as you just saw. This is all tied to Apple's decision to ramp up production in India to skirt those tariffs in China. And that's not the outcome the president has been looking for. Two weeks ago during earnings, Apple kind of painted this new picture of its supply chain designed to mitigate the impact of tariffs. The plan as they laid it out, iPhone sold in the United States will be sourced from India, while other products like Macs, AirPods and watches are going to come from Vietnam. China in the meantime will supply the rest of the world. So far though, no commitment from Apple to make iPhones in the United States, which is the goal of this Trump administration. And this, this, let's talk a little bit about why there's just so much focus on India here. India, iPhone production has been ramping up significantly since the pandemic when supply chains closed down due to China's COVID lockdowns. It's ramping up again now in response to tariffs, but Apple still needs a lot more capacity in India to produce the approximately 65 million iPhones sold here in the United States each year. Remember Tim Cook and Apple have made a ton of overtures to Trump and his administration this year. Cook's personal $1 million donation to the inauguration, showing up behind the president during the swearing in, building a new factory to make AI servers in Houston. But that doesn't seem to be enough for the president or Apple investors. Apple is the only Mag 7 name in the red since Liberation Day on April 2nd. And it's not just that, Apple has largely been underperforming its peers all year long. Some of that is the tariff impact of course, but there are a number of other issues hitting the company like delay of the big AI update to Siri that caused a slew of analysts to lower their price targets and revenue estimates for Apple this year, Kelly.
