Researchers have conducted a study involving 5,000 participants across eight countries to reassess reported penicillin allergies using a smartphone app. Patients identified as low-risk were given penicillin under hospital supervision, resulting in over 95% having their allergy label safely removed with minimal adverse events.

The study's results are seen as significant for hospital care, as de-labeling penicillin allergies allows for more effective treatment and reduces the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics that can drive drug-resistant infections. Penicillin allergy labels affect one in ten patients worldwide, often leading to less optimal antibiotic choices.

21st century technology helping to revive a key medical weapon which revolutionised the fight against bacterial infections in the first half of last century. Penicillin has been around for more than 70 years. It is still our frontline most used antibiotic in the hospital. We're giving back patients penicillin. As part of a study of 5,000 people across eight countries a smartphone app was used to assess patients who had reported penicillin allergy. Those considered low-risk were then prescribed the drug and carefully monitored in hospital. Our study demonstrated that with the test dose more than 95% of people had their penicillin allergy label removed with very minimal minimal patients having an adverse event. Nathan was one of those who fell into the 95%. At greater risk of respiratory infections due to immunosuppressant treatment he had spent a lifetime avoiding penicillin. Being de-labeled gives me access to a life-saving drug, gives me access to a broader range of treatment and more effective treatment. The results are considered a game-changer especially in the hospital setting where patients can be at greater risk of developing a drug resistant infection. It's addressing a public health crisis. Penicillin allergy affects one in ten patients around the globe and if you carry this label into hospital you're more likely to receive inappropriate or broad-spectrum antibiotics and drive superbugs.
