In contrast, younger generations are more likely to use digital tools, social media, and real-time updates to stay informed and mentally prepared for emergencies.

Experts recommend bridging this gap by encouraging older adults to adopt modern safety measures, such as wireless alerts and digital backups, while younger people are advised to focus on practical basics like emergency kits and limiting information overload. Regardless of age, regular practice and a clear plan are emphasized as essential for effective disaster response.

America's generational disaster readiness gap

We've all heard the phrase, mom knows best, but when it comes to natural disasters and prepping for them, that might not be the best advice. The baby boomer generation, they've been through a lot. They have a sense of independence and grit, may feel a sense of invulnerability. This mindset can be incredibly dangerous. For younger adults, preparedness looks different. It's driven by screens, social media, and nonstop updates. Younger generations are much more tuned in to the world around them. They may be connected with social media and have seen some of the possible outcomes of natural disasters. Make them more alert and aware. The apps, knowing how to use radar, all of this technology can make them mentally prepared as well. So what closes the gap, no matter your age? For boomers and Gen Xers, it means adding modern redundancies, like keeping wireless alerts on, battery banks, copies of IDs, and prescription lists stored safely, and a printed plan if cell service fails. For millennials and Gen Xers, turning awareness into durable basics, like a 72-hour kit, cash on hand, and boundaries on doom scrolling so they can think clearly when it's time to act. No matter what age you are, you need to be prepared. Get your information from the media, but be mindful of how often that you are checking in. Practice. Americans say the weather where they live feels more extreme than a decade ago. No matter your age, knowing what to do before a storm hits can make all the difference.
