In Altadena, California, recent rains have raised concerns about erosion and mudslides in neighborhoods impacted by the Eaton fire. The loss of vegetation and root systems on the hillsides has left the soil unable to absorb water, increasing the risk of runoff and debris flow into low-lying homes.

Residents are taking preventive actions such as tarping hillsides and construction sites to stabilize the soil and prevent further damage. Ongoing rainfall is complicating recovery and rebuilding efforts, with forecasts predicting more rain in the coming days.

I'm here in Altadena where the Eaton fire took place, taking out many of these homes, and the biggest concern here now is the burn scars up on the hillsides. When you scorch those hillsides, that soil no longer acts like soil. It's no longer absorbing that much moisture. It acts more like concrete. You don't have that vegetation and those deep tree root systems to hold the ground in place, and then you combine that with the steep topography of the San Gabriel Mountains and water just runs off, bringing all the mud and debris with it into these low-lying homes. That's why you see a lot of neighbors around us taking precautions and tarping their properties, tarping their hillsides. Like the one behind me, you can see these tarps. They really tried to lay those out, but it looks like they got it mangled a bit. The tarps act to prevent further ground saturation and hold that soil in place and prevent erosion. Now, looking forward though, beyond this immediate threat of this much rain, this is the last thing that Altadena needs as a community. Right now, the priority is building back, healing, recovering, and all this rain is just a setback. People are laying tarps over their construction sites, hoping to keep the soil in place so that it doesn't delay the process any further. And with more rain on the forecast lingering throughout the week, it's turning out to be too much of a good thing. From Altadena, California, I'm Katie Tutrone, The Weather Channel.
