According to the UN World Food Program, no supplies have passed through this route since its closure, which previously accounted for half of the agency's food deliveries to the region. Residents and aid organizations report that food is becoming scarcer and more expensive, with community kitchens and health clinics forced to close due to supply shortages.

Displacement has increased as a result of ongoing military operations, with many families lacking access to basic necessities such as water and food. While Israeli authorities state that aid continues to reach the north and efforts are underway to expand capacity at another crossing, the UN reports that a significant portion of aid requests have been denied. A global hunger monitor has confirmed famine conditions in Gaza City, though this assessment is disputed by Israel.

Aid route closure worsens shortages in northern Gaza

Since Israel shut a vital corridor into northern Gaza before escalating its offensive this month, community kitchens and health clinics have closed and vital flows of food have slowed. That's according to residents who say food is getting scarcer and more expensive and UN agencies who say they're facing logistical challenges moving supplies. Since Israel closed the Zakim crossing on September 12, the UN World Food Program or WFP told Reuters it had not managed to bring any supplies through. The crossing was previously the route for half of the WFP's food deliveries into Gaza. Here's the agency's Antoine Renard. There's one entry point actually to get to Gaza City and this is El Rashid Road. So the challenge that we have is to bring any of the goods up from south to north is that currently the road is fully congested with people fleeing the area given the military operation. According to UN data and the Palestinian NGOs network, the number of daily meals served as aid in northern Gaza had dropped to 59,000 as of September 22nd from 155,000 near the end of August. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced by Israel's latest offensive though others have stayed put despite evacuation orders. Residents say conditions are getting worse. Ahmed Koder says he fled Gaza City to Nusayrat with his family of six and has quote not seen water, life, food, anything. Others here say they're resorting to seawater for cooking, cleaning dishes and showering. Kogad, the Israeli military arm that oversees aid flows, says humanitarian aid to the north continues and that it seeks to expand the capacity of another crossing, Kisufim, into central Gaza. Israel says international agencies are responsible for distributing aid which Kogad said it was trying to help. But the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says Israel had denied 40% of requested movements to northern Gaza in the 10 days after Zakim's closure. A global hunger monitor confirmed last month that famine had taken hold in Gaza City and was likely to spread, a finding disputed by Israel.

UN sanctions are set to be reimposed on Iran on Saturday - after a failed bid by Russia and China to delay them. Only four countries voted in favour of the draft resolution.
