A team of engineers at Columbia University has created Emo, a humanoid robot capable of lip syncing with remarkable accuracy. The robot was trained using artificial intelligence by first observing itself in a mirror and then analyzing YouTube videos of people talking, singing, and making various sounds. 

By combining these two learning models, Emo can generate appropriate facial gestures in sync with speech. The project highlights advancements in robotics and AI, with researchers predicting that humanoid robots will closely resemble humans in the near future. Emo also features an AI-generated music album titled 'Hello World.'

Okay, buckle up everyone. You are looking at Emo, a humanoid robot built by a team of engineers at Columbia University. So to help it mimic human facial movements, they trained it using AI and now the creation of a lip-syncing android makes our moment. What we were able to do is train a robot to move its lips when it talks. So actually the process is very simple. There's two stages. The first thing it needs to do, it looks at itself in the mirror and it just makes faces, like a child making faces in the mirror. It's funny actually to watch it making faces. It then goes to YouTube and watches people and how they move their lips when they talk, when they sing, when they emit all kinds of sounds. It puts these two models together and from there it's pretty easy for it to make the appropriate facial gesture at the appropriate time. Students start calling the robots all kinds of names. Every robot has a name because we're working on emotions, the kind of nickname Emo came about. I'm a jaded roboticist so when I walk into the lab and the robot smiles at me, I smile back. I guarantee you within a few years they're going to look just like humans. It's going to happen fast. Okay, full credit to them. This is astonishing work. The robot does have its own album, AI generated album called Hello World. I'm just not promising to download it.
