AccuWeather's 2025 fall forecast anticipates a warmer than average start to the season for over half of the United States, with regions such as California, Nevada, Oregon, and the Northeast likely to experience higher temperatures. The transition to autumn is expected to be slower in some areas, while others may see more rapid changes. Severe weather, including the risk of tornadoes and flooding, is projected for the Southeast and Midwest as warm and cold air masses collide. 

Drought conditions are expected to persist in much of the West, leading to a high to very high wildfire risk, particularly in California and the Northwest. Offshore wind events may begin earlier than usual, increasing fire danger. Snowfall is predicted to arrive on time in the Rockies and Northeast, with some northern regions possibly seeing earlier snow. The hurricane season is also expected to be active, with 13 to 18 named storms and several direct impacts anticipated.

AccuWeather's 2025 fall forecast

For more than half the country, another warmer than average start to fall is expected, with some areas seeing a slower transition to autumn than others. California, Nevada, parts of Oregon. Another area that may be warmer than average could be the Northeast, where they could see higher pressure aloft building into that region. In between, it's going to be a back and forth process. Fall can be a busy time for severe weather. Accuweather's long range expert Paul Cook says this year will be no different with vast stretches of the Southeast and Midwest at risk for severe weather and flooding. As warm, humid air collides with colder air as the season progresses, October could be the biggest contrast set up temperature wise between the South and the northern Plains states, and that's where we may get more in the way of maybe some tornadoes with much of the West facing drought conditions. The wildfire risk this fall is expected to be high to very high. For many, especially in California and the Northwest, where large wind fueled fires will be possible. What we've seen so far on some of the trends of the models in past years we've compared to this year. Looks like September could start increasing on the offshore wind events. Bad news. That means things starting up a little earlier. For snow lovers, past the lock says the typical areas like the Rockies and upper reaches of the Northeast will see snow begin on time. Some in the northern Plains and upper Midwest could even see snow earlier than average, but for the rest of the country, there could be a slight delay. September is the heart of hurricane season, which runs through November 30th. The season is forecast to be busy with Accuweather forecasting 13 to 18 named storms, 7 to 10 of which will become hurricanes. Three to six direct impacts are expected on US soil.
