While elevated water temperatures are a major factor, the study found that over one-third of corals near parrotfish exhibited bleaching even when water temperatures were not particularly high, with about a quarter of those showing visible bite marks.

In contrast, areas without parrotfish showed minimal bleaching, suggesting that the stress caused by parrotfish biting may be contributing to the problem. This adds another layer of concern for coral reefs, which are already under threat from environmental stressors.
