A large home in Strathfield, New South Wales, has been extensively damaged by fire in what authorities believe to be an arson attack. The property, which was unoccupied at the time and set for auction, was engulfed in flames after neighbours noticed the blaze and alerted emergency services.

Witnesses reported seeing two individuals fleeing the scene as the fire took hold, causing significant damage particularly to the ground floor. Police and fire investigators are now examining the site for evidence as the search for the suspects continues.

The home was empty, so it was neighbours that raised the alarm at around 3.30am. Oh my god. Unaware that the blaze taking hold next door was the work of arsonists, a pair spotted running out a side door as the living area fell to pieces behind them. Unfortunately there is a lot of smoke and heat damage to the remainder of the premises and quite significant damage to the ground floor. The owners had moved out not long ago, preparing to sell the eight bedroom, six bathroom property late next week. But today the daylight made the damage clear, the bottom floor left gutted and charred. The home was expected to fetch around $6.5 million, but now the residents are dealing with serious damage to the house less than two weeks out from auction. We wish them all the best because this is obviously a very difficult time. Fire investigators today joined police searching for any traces the firebugs left behind as the hunt continues.
