The 2026 World Cup final will be held at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, world football’s governing body FIFA has announced. The world’s most popular sporting event will be held in 16 cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico, according to the tournament schedule unveiled by FIFA.

FIFA has never been an organisation to shy away from a bit of hyperbole, but the scale of this World Cup is without equal. The 2026 World Cup final will be played at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the last of an unprecedented 104 matches taking place across three countries. We'll have millions of people coming to the United States for the whole World Cup, to Mexico and to Canada as well. And of course, being in New York, which is such a cosmopolitan city where you have between New York and New Jersey over 200 nationalities. Mexico's Azteca Stadium will host the opening match. It's a country that's held two previous World Cups in 1970 and 1986. We are Toronto. The World Cup is in Canada for the first time. We are Canada's opening game. Like Mexico, it will have 13 matches. The tournament has been expanded to include 48 teams, compared with the 32 we saw at Qatar 2022. It will last a record 39 days. That's 10 days longer than the previous World Cup. The new format will feature 12 four-team groups and a last 32 knockout round for the first time. In contrast to Qatar, players and fans will be doing a lot of travelling. The shortest distance between a quarterfinal and semifinal venue is more than 800 kilometres. With all the teams, not just the United States or Mexico or Canada, the idea is that you get them to a location throughout the tournament. You don't have teams jumping across the country. The big positive for international teams is the increased chance of qualifying. Africa, for example, will be represented by at least nine countries, up from five in 2022.
