A 14-year-old Chinese exchange student has died after being stabbed in the torso by a fellow student in Edgeworth in Newcastle. The pair were staying in separate bedrooms of the same house.

A 14-year-old exchange student from China died after being stabbed in a home in Edgeworth, New South Wales. The incident occurred while the student was staying with a host couple, and police allege she was attacked by a 13-year-old fellow student who was also staying in the home. 

Authorities responded after a commotion was heard, and the victim was transported to hospital with a stab wound to her torso but later died from her injuries. Police have arrested the 13-year-old at the scene and seized a kitchen knife believed to be the weapon. Both students had only recently arrived in Australia and did not know each other prior to the trip. Homicide detectives are investigating, with support from the Chinese consulate.

It should have been the trip of their young lives. So young, yes. That's awful. I really feel for them. An exchange student, just 14 years old and travelling from China, had been staying in an Edgeworth home with a couple in their 50s. But last night, she was allegedly attacked by a fellow student. All parties had retired to their rooms for the evening when one of the hosts heard a commotion of some sort. And when she went to investigate, she located the 14-year-old with a wound. The young girl was rushed to John Hunter Hospital with a stab wound to her torso, but she later died from her injury. The 13-year-old was arrested at the scene. It's pretty scary because it's the same age as my kids. I mean, like, they could know these people. They might not, but it's a lot for the kids in the area to have to come to terms with. Police believe the pair were staying in separate bedrooms and hadn't known each other before their trip. They had only been in Australia for just over a week. As you can imagine, investigation with young girls involved language barriers, working through the consulate. They're not Australian residents, obviously, and so there are obvious complications and complexities with that. It's such a quiet street and we never have any problems here. Homicide detectives have been called in while police have seized what they allege was the murder weapon, a kitchen knife that's now being subjected to forensic examination. It does appear to be a knife that was from that location, from a particular drawer at that location, and certainly at this point in time, we anticipate that is the weapon that was used to inflict the injury. The pair had been set to leave at the end of next week. Instead, police were today forced to break the news to their devastated families back home. Hannah Taylor, 10 News.

The ruling comes a month after Brazil’s top court ordered the former president to wear an ankle monitor, submit to a curfew and abide by limitations on his activity as legal proceedings investigating an alleged coup plot continue.
