After three years of negotiations at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, member countries have reached a landmark agreement to enhance global preparedness for future health crises, drawing lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed 32-page agreement, presented in green to indicate approval from all member states, aims to ensure fair global access to drugs and vaccines during pandemics. It mandates nations to establish policies for research, increase local production of vaccines, and provide greater oversight of global supply chains.

The agreement, which still requires ratification at the WHO's assembly, represents only the second binding accord in the WHO's 75-year history, following a previous tobacco agreement in 2003. Despite the absence of American negotiators in the final talks, due to the United States' withdrawal process initiated by Donald Trump, the agreement marks a significant collaborative effort among nations. Member states spent considerable time debating Article 11, which addresses the transfer of pandemic health products and technology to developing nations.

The pact has been heralded as a historic step forward for international collaboration. Leaders emphasized that multilateralism remains vital, especially as potential global health threats such as bird flu, measles, mpox, and Ebola continue to pose risks. The final agreement is expected to significantly strengthen the world's readiness to respond to future pandemics.
