The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced changes to its COVID-19 vaccine protocol regarding booster shots. According to the new policy, updated COVID-19 vaccines will be approved for use this season primarily for seniors and individuals at higher risk of severe disease, including those 65 and older, people with underlying medical conditions, pregnant women, and those recently pregnant. For these groups, the FDA will require only antibody data to approve updated booster shots.

For individuals between the ages of 50 and 64, the FDA will now require vaccine manufacturers to conduct full randomized clinical trials before new boosters can be approved. For healthy individuals under 50, there will be no updated COVID-19 booster available under the new guidelines. The process is contingent upon updates to the booster, and it remains unclear whether previously available boosters will remain accessible.

Details regarding the decision have not been widely published, and some aspects of the policy remain unclear. The FDA did not follow its usual practice of holding public advisory meetings or discussions for this decision. Instead, the policy was outlined in a policy opinion piece published in a medical journal.
