Conducting new full clinical trials during a surge is challenging, as the study would need to conclude before the surge ends.

The potential delay in the updated booster could mean continued reliance on older vaccines from previous seasons. There is also discussion about possibly approving the updated booster for certain high-risk groups, such as older or immunocompromised individuals. However, without FDA approval, it would not be available for broader groups who may want it.

Additionally, the situation with COVID boosters may have implications for the approval processes of other vaccines, such as the flu vaccine. Concerns about safety standards and regulatory consistency might cause hesitation in public perception and affect future vaccine development investments.
