Recent research based on Gallup polling shows a notable decline in happiness among Americans under 30, diverging from historical trends where younger people typically reported higher happiness levels. The study finds that individuals in this age group are also struggling with issues related to meaning, purpose, health, relationships, and financial security.

Social scientist Arthur Brooks attributes this shift to changes in how young people pursue meaning in their lives. He notes that fewer young people are engaging in activities traditionally linked to fulfillment, such as forming close relationships, participating in religious or philosophical communities, finding purpose in work, connecting with nature, and understanding the role of suffering. Brooks suggests that modern factors, including increased reliance on social media and dating apps, may be contributing to these challenges.
