Cancer deaths continue to decline, according to a new report from the National Cancer Institute, significantly due to decreased smoking rates. The smoking population saw a dramatic fall from 42% in 1965 to just over 11% three years ago, which has been a positive contributor to the overall reduction in cancer rates. However, not all trends are positive. The report highlights a concerning increase in cancers related to obesity, such as breast, uterine, and colorectal cancers. The rise in these obesity-driven cancers is attributed to increased estrogen and inflammation, both of which are influenced by higher body weight.

Another alarming trend is the increase in certain cancer types among younger individuals. For example, there is a noted rise in colon cancer cases in younger people, which has resulted in the recommended age for screening being lowered from 50 to 45. Similarly, breast cancer incidence is growing among women under the age of 50. Factors such as earlier menstruation, delayed fertility, and alcohol consumption, which contributes to approximately 16% of breast cancers, are speculated to play roles in these increases. Environmental factors and the microbiome are also areas requiring further research.

There are preventable measures that could significantly impact cancer rates. The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, which prevents certain types of cancers, is underutilized with only 38% of eligible children aged 9 to 17 having received it. The potential for increased vaccination coverage could greatly negate cancer incidence associated with HPV. Additionally, for individuals who have smoked significantly, a low-dose CT scan, a form of cancer screening, is available. Despite its potential benefits, only 18% of Americans have undergone this screening, suggesting room for improvement in proactive cancer prevention.
