Family historian Jari Honora discovered that the pope's maternal grandparents were free people of color from New Orleans with Caribbean roots, and his maternal grandfather was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. 

Further investigation suggests that the pope's family migrated between New Orleans and Haiti during the mid-19th century, reflecting broader patterns among free families of color in Louisiana at the time. While there are rumors of additional connections, such as to the singer Beyoncé, these remain unverified. The findings underscore the diverse background of Pope Leo XIV and its resonance within the black Catholic community.
