A digital investigation by Al Jazeera's Sanad team has revealed a severe waste crisis in Gaza, where the destruction of infrastructure and basic services has led to the proliferation of garbage dumps across the territory. Satellite imagery identified 42 major waste sites, with the largest concentrations in Gaza City and Khan Younis, and many more smaller dumps likely present but undetectable from space.

The closure or destruction of all main waste transfer stations and restricted access to landfills have left municipalities unable to manage the growing waste. This has resulted in hazardous conditions near displacement camps and residential areas, increasing the risk of diseases such as hepatitis A and polio, as reported by the United Nations and WHO. The crisis is seen as a symptom of the broader collapse of Gaza's infrastructure amid ongoing conflict.
