Canadian officials have upgraded their travel advisory for southern China following an outbreak of the chikungunya virus, which has infected more than 8,000 people in the region. The virus, primarily transmitted through mosquito bites, is not currently present in Canada except for travel-related cases, but experts warn that climate change could increase local mosquito populations capable of carrying the virus in the future.

Travelers to affected areas, including Foshan and Guangdong province, are advised to consult health resources, consider vaccination, and take preventive measures such as using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing. Chikungunya symptoms typically develop within a week of infection and can include high fever, severe joint pain, and fatigue. While most people recover within two weeks, some may experience prolonged joint pain. There is no specific treatment for chikungunya, and medical care is supportive.
