For the past 20 years, the United States has been the leading government donor to humanitarian response plans, development aid and multilateral development banks — particularly in African countries.

A recent study published in The Lancet indicates that cuts to USAID funding could result in up to 14 million deaths within five years. USAID has played a significant role in reducing preventable deaths among children and adults in low and middle-income countries over the past two decades. 

The research highlights the United States' position as the leading government donor to humanitarian response plans and development aid, especially in Africa. The study also notes that the Trump administration has already reduced more than 80% of USAID programs, raising concerns about the future impact on global health.
