Aid officials attribute the disruption to decisions made under the Trump administration to reduce support for international assistance, which previously supplied about half of the world's RUTF.

Although UNICEF and the U.S. State Department have since pledged to restore and increase funding, health workers report that supply pipelines are slow to recover. Aid groups warn that gaps in treatment can have long-term physical and cognitive impacts on children, and have reported deaths in other African regions during periods when U.S.-funded programs were halted.
