The ruling specifically affects tariffs against Canada and Mexico, which were justified by accusations of cross-border fentanyl trafficking. Trump officials have strongly criticized the decision, calling it partisan, though the dissent in the ruling came from a Democrat-appointed judge. Only tariffs enacted under a specific act allowing presidential authority during emergencies are impacted, while others, such as duties on steel, aluminum, and vehicles, remain in place. The Trump administration has until mid-October to appeal to the Supreme Court and may seek to keep the tariffs active during the appeal. Meanwhile, Canadian officials continue trade negotiations with the U.S., though they do not expect all tariffs to be removed.
