The Big Bend Sentinel, a weekly newspaper serving Marfa, Texas for 99 years, has adapted to changing times by merging its operations with a local café called the Sentinel. Owners Maisie Crowe and Max Cabot, who moved from New York City, purchased the paper in 2019 after being approached by its previous owners. Recognizing the financial challenges facing local newspapers, the couple decided to subsidize the publication with revenue from the café, restaurant, and retail sales.

This innovative approach has allowed the business to expand from four employees to nearly twenty, making it one of the largest employers in the town of about 2,000 residents. The Sentinel remains a vital source of local news, especially as other media outlets do not cover the area, and continues to serve both locals and tourists.
