Filmmaker Joshua Seftel’s mother, Pat, is relocating from Florida to be closer to her children, joining a broader trend of seniors moving north for family support. Known as "reverse migration," this phenomenon has seen nearly one in five older Floridians returning north as their need for familial assistance grows. Pat previously moved to Florida two decades ago with her late husband, building a new life after his passing, making friends, and staying socially active.

Facing recent health challenges, including major surgery and cancer, as well as the loss of a close friend, Pat decided that being nearer to family was the right choice. The move has required significant downsizing and sorting through personal belongings, many of which carry strong sentimental value connected to her late husband and her past experiences.

After settling into her new residence, Pat described the process as difficult but noted positive early experiences with fellow residents. She has already begun forming new friendships and adjusting to her environment. Pat encourages others in similar situations to consider the benefits of change, acknowledging the difficulty of leaving the familiar, but also the potential for new opportunities.
