Known as papal vestments, the pope's official attire has long been made by two family-run tailoring businesses in Rome. They're eagerly waiting to watch white smoke rise from the Sistine Chapel and see a new pope emerge, possibly wearing the garments they created.

For generations, the official garments of newly elected popes—known as papal vestments—have been made by two longstanding, family-run tailoring businesses in Rome. One such tailor is Raniero Mancinelli, who opened his shop in the 1960s near the Vatican and has crafted attire for three different popes. Mancinelli prepares several sizes of cassocks in advance, as the identity and measurements of the new pope are unknown prior to the election.

Mancinelli is joined by the Gamarelli family, who have operated their tailoring business in Rome for approximately 200 years. Alessia Gamarelli, now the sixth-generation family member and first woman to manage the store, says her family has tailored vestments for eight popes. Both tailors hope to see the new pope appear in garments they have created, watching closely to recognise their own handiwork.

The pope's primary garment is a hand-stitched white wool cassock, which can be accompanied by a burgundy cape and is completed with a white skull cap, known as a zucchetto. During Pope Francis's tenure, the vestments became simpler, according to Gamarelli. However, the exact future style of the papal attire remains uncertain until the new pope steps out onto the balcony at St. Peter’s Square.

Both tailoring families eagerly anticipate the moment when the white smoke signals the election of a new pope, hoping their work will be part of the historic unveiling.
