However, recent years have brought extended periods of record-breaking heat and increased dryness, leading to higher mortality rates among these cacti. Researchers report that saguaro death rates in the Phoenix area have risen significantly, outpacing the plant's slow natural reproduction.

Efforts are underway at the Desert Botanical Garden to identify and cultivate saguaro varieties that are more resilient to extreme heat and drought. While the species is not expected to disappear entirely, scientists emphasize the importance of human intervention in supporting the survival of these desert icons.
