Texas public universities will now require undocumented students to pay out-of-state tuition, reversing a policy from the 2001 Texas DREAM Act that allowed those who had lived in the state for three years before graduating high school to pay in-state rates. This change could increase tuition costs by up to $40,000 per year for affected students, with nearly 20,000 students impacted in 2023.

In a separate move, Texas has mandated that all public school classrooms display the Ten Commandments, prompting a lawsuit from parents who argue this violates their First Amendment rights. The parents claim the requirement infringes on the separation of church and state.
