Kara Egan founded Teal Health during the pandemic, looking to make it easier for women to get preventive cervical cancer screening more easily. Five years later, the FDA has approved the startup’s self-administered HPV testing wand, which in clinical trials proved to be just as accurate as the swabs done in a doctor’s office.

Teal Health, a health technology company founded by Kara Egan, has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its self-administered HPV testing wand. The product, developed to facilitate preventive cervical cancer screening, was designed to be easy and comfortable for women to use at home. 

A nationwide clinical trial across 16 sites demonstrated that the at-home test was as accurate as traditional swabs performed in a doctor’s office, with a reported 96% accuracy rate. The trial found high acceptance among participants, with 80 percent of women approached choosing to take part and 94 percent of trial participants preferring the self-administered test to conventional screening methods.

Teal Health’s at-home test is intended for women aged 25 to 65 and uses the same primary HPV test as those conducted in clinical settings. After a telehealth consultation, women receive the kit, collect the sample themselves, and return it via regular mail for laboratory analysis. If abnormal results are found, follow-up is arranged through another telehealth visit, which may lead to in-person care as necessary.

The company reports that many women are behind on cervical cancer screenings, and hopes the new at-home test will increase screening rates and help in the prevention of cervical cancer. According to Egan, doctors have responded positively to the innovation, as it allows for more time during appointments to address other health concerns.
