The imposition of tariffs on imported flowers is likely to lead to higher prices for consumers, just as the demand for flowers spikes with Mother's Day. A significant portion of flowers in the United States are imported, with 80% coming from countries like Ecuador, Columbia, Canada, Thailand, and Holland. In the previous year, the U.S. imported $2.2 billion worth of cut flowers and greens, largely from South America, due to their year-round growing advantage.

Domestically, small flower growers have seen an increase in business, particularly selling at farmers markets and for weddings. The inclination towards buying local is strong among consumers, especially brides looking to feature local flowers. However, small domestic growers are not exempt from the effects of tariffs, as they often import supplies such as bulbs from abroad. For instance, Moonshot Farm in East Windsor is experiencing increased costs due to 10% tariffs on imported flower bulbs from Italy and Holland.

Industry experts advise consumers to work within their budgets and rely on florists to offer alternative arrangements. Despite the challenges posed by tariffs, florists are adept at creating impactful arrangements with available resources, suggesting that there remains a positive outlook in the flower industry, even amidst cost increases.
