A new study from the New England Journal of Medicine compares two weight loss drugs, Tirzepatide and Semaglutide. CBS News medical contributor Dr. Celine Gounder breaks down the findings.

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has compared the effectiveness of two weight loss medications, Tirzepatide and Semaglutide. The head-to-head trial assessed patients over a period of 72 weeks. Participants using Tirzepatide, marketed as Zepbound or Mounjaro, experienced an average weight loss of about 20% of their body weight, while those on Semaglutide, sold as Ozempic or Wegovy, lost approximately 14% of their body weight. This represented an average difference of eight pounds in favour of Tirzepatide.

The study was funded by Lilly, the manufacturer of Tirzepatide, and this connection was noted during the discussion of the findings. In addition to weight loss, both medications were observed to improve several health indicators, such as blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol.

Access and affordability continue to be concerns for patients considering these medications. The average out-of-pocket cost is over $1,000, with only about one in four insurance companies providing coverage for weight loss purposes. Purchasing directly from manufacturers can reduce this expense to under $500, depending on the medication and supplier.

Policy efforts to expand coverage for these drugs have varied. Proposals have been made to extend Medicare coverage, though not all such measures have been implemented, and the majority of private insurers still do not cover these medications for obesity.
