Delegates representing the Southern Baptist Church, the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, have voted to pursue a national ban on same-sex marriage. This marks the first time the group has formally decided to work towards ending the legal recognition of same-sex marriage.

The Southern Baptists plan to begin by seeking the reversal of the Supreme Court's Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. If overturned, the legality of same-sex marriage would be determined by individual states. The Respect for Marriage Act would continue to recognize existing same-sex marriages. The denomination has previously demonstrated political influence, including its vocal support for overturning Roe v. Wade.
