It's been nearly a year since historic flooding hit parts of Waterville, Minn. hard, and some people are still in limbo as their homes sit empty.

Nearly a year after significant flooding affected Waterville, Minnesota, some homeowners remain uncertain about the future of their properties. Many homes, such as Jenny Johnson's lakeside cabin on Lake Tatanka, continue to sit empty, with damage including mold and structural loss still visible.

Federal disaster relief from FEMA is only available for damage to primary residences, leaving secondary homeowners like Johnson without federal aid. While local officials can request state funds for property buyouts or assistance with raising homes, FEMA would only fund 75 percent of approved projects, and the state would typically cover the remaining cost. However, reports indicate that state funding is currently unavailable.

As a result, some residents are left waiting for answers, while continuing to pay mortgages and utility bills for uninhabitable homes. The city of Waterville has a flood recovery program in place, but it offers limited assistance of $500 per residence. Homeowners affected by the flooding have expressed hope that others will thoroughly research potential risks before purchasing property in flood-prone areas.
