Throughout history, the American backyard has greatly evolved. Even after the pandemic forced people to spend more time outside, outdoor living spaces have become a booming business, to the tune of about $10 billion a year.

The evolution of outdoor living spaces in the United States has seen significant changes, particularly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As more people were required to spend time outdoors for safety reasons, the demand for enhanced outdoor environments grew. According to industry sources, spending on outdoor furniture and kitchens has reached approximately $10 billion annually.

Two-thirds of newly constructed American homes now include porches, indicating the growing popularity of outdoor living. Design elements once reserved for interiors, such as elaborate kitchens, entertainment systems, and living rooms, are now being recreated in outdoor settings. Technological improvements in outdoor fabrics and materials have allowed for greater durability against various climate conditions.

Luxury backyard designs, featuring amenities such as sunken living rooms, gyms, hot tubs, and sport courts, are becoming increasingly prevalent. Justin Fox, founder of Foxterra Design, notes a marked increase in demand for resort-style yards since the pandemic, with some projects costing several million dollars.

Despite the rise in high-end installations, experts point out that outdoor living enhancements are accessible across a range of budgets. Joanna Saltz, editor-in-chief of House Beautiful Magazine, emphasizes that elegant outdoor spaces can be achieved with simple additions like string lights, making the trend attainable for different homeowners. Outdoor kitchens, once considered a luxury, are now seen as essential by many, and there is ongoing interest in the mental and emotional benefits associated with spending more time in nature.
