Rio Tinto's Kennecott copper mine in Utah is one of the largest copper mining operations in the United States, supplying approximately 20% of the country's refined copper. The mine spans 2.5 miles across and is 4,250 feet deep. Its operation involves extracting ore from challenging deposits, with the richest copper located at the bottom of the pit. To access this, waste rock without enough copper content is regularly removed and transported by specialized trucks that can weigh more than a million pounds when loaded.

Kennecott operates one of only two domestic copper smelters in the country, making it a key component of the United States' vertically integrated copper supply chain. Currently, the U.S. imports about half of its refined copper supply, with foreign entities, especially from China, playing an increasing role in controlling global copper supply chains. Copper is essential for products such as smartphones, data centers, and solar panels, and its secure supply has been identified by the White House as a national security matter.

Efforts are underway at the federal level to review tariffs and support domestic copper production. However, the mining industry faces significant challenges, particularly around the permitting process. New mines in the U.S. require more than 90 permits and often encounter lengthy litigation, with an average development timeline of 29 years—among the slowest in the world. Market prices for copper in the U.S. have outpaced those on the London Metal Exchange, driven by demand and anticipation of potential policy changes.
