Saint Peter’s Basilica, the world’s largest Catholic church and a prominent monument, is undergoing a major restoration of its cupola. The restoration, which began several months ago, is part of preparations for the Catholic Church’s jubilee year, celebrated every 25 years. The work is taking place in the Clementine Dome, one of the basilica’s minor cupolas, and involves a team of restorers and mosaicists meticulously reconditioning the 17th-century mosaics.

A specially designed suspended scaffold allows the restoration to proceed without disrupting the basilica’s daily functions. The project covers nearly 200 square meters of mosaics, which are among the oldest in the basilica and were originally commissioned by Pope Clement VIII. The restoration is expected to be completed in 18 months, returning the cupola to its original splendor.

Hay que tener mucha paciencia porque tenemos que trabajar en cada una de las baldosas del mosaico. Hay partes hechas de cristal para proteger el pan de oro. Aquí, por ejemplo, podemos ver que la protección de vidrio se ha caído, así que tenemos que consolidar con resina para volver a adherir la capa de vidrio. Casi 200 metros cuadrados de mosaicos cubren la cúpula, es decir más de 40 metros de altura. Estos mosaicos datan de principios del siglo XVII. Son los mosaicos más antiguos de la basílica. Fueron encargados por el Papa Clemente VIII. Las obras de restauración deberían estar terminadas en 18 meses.
