The pro-natalist movement is gaining attention as it argues in favor of increasing birth rates to address certain socio-economic challenges. This movement is seen by some as potentially controversial, evoking images of a society heavily influenced by patriarchal control. However, the importance of understanding the data associated with fertility rates and population trends extends beyond this movement. Presently, the United States has a fertility rate of 1.6, below the population replacement level of 2.1. This decline in birth rates raises concerns about economic stability and workforce sustainability.

Daryl Bricker, Chief Executive Officer of Ipsos Public Affairs and co-author of "Empty Planet," highlights the global implications of declining birth rates. He points out that many regions, including Western and Eastern Europe, have negative population growth. Countries like Canada and the UK, with fertility rates of 1.2 and 1.4 respectively, are experiencing this trend. This decline is coupled with an aging population, which presents additional healthcare challenges such as increased dementia diagnoses. 

As the global population is expected to peak and subsequently decline by around 2040, governments are exploring potential measures to address these trends. While initiatives like offering financial incentives for families might provide marginal assistance, larger solutions could include reducing the cost of childcare and enhancing community support for parents. Immigration is also considered a potential supplement to populate growth in the short term, though it involves complex socio-political dynamics that require careful management.
