Italy sent out a helicopter to evacuate the woman on Monday evening, responding to a call from Sea-Watch rescuers.

A pregnant woman went into labour shortly after being rescued from a migrant boat in the central Mediterranean Sea. She was evacuated by helicopter to Italy after rescuers from the German charity Sea-Watch identified rare complications requiring urgent medical attention. 

Sea-Watch had found the overcrowded boat with 67 people and provided life jackets before transferring them to their rescue ship. The previous night, the crew had also rescued six people who had fallen overboard. The rescue ship is now heading to Salerno port in southern Italy with 72 people on board. According to Frontex, the central Mediterranean route has seen a 9% increase in irregular crossings compared to the previous year.
