Utilities are investing in smart grid technology, including smart meters and self-healing systems, which allow for remote detection and rerouting of power during outages, reducing the need for field crews and minimizing downtime for customers.

These upgrades include burying power lines in high-risk areas and replacing aging poles, with companies like Duke Energy installing over 75,000 smart grid devices statewide. Last hurricane season, these technologies helped prevent over 300,000 outages in Florida, demonstrating significant improvements in grid resilience and response times during severe weather events.
