A team from Northwestern University in Chicago has developed a new wearable device designed to measure how much milk a baby consumes during breastfeeding. The device uses wireless electrodes placed on the mother's breast that detect changes in breast tissue consistency as the baby feeds. Data is transmitted via Bluetooth to a smartphone, providing a graphical representation of the milk intake during breastfeeding sessions.

Dr. Jennifer Wicks, a Northwestern Medicine pediatrician and co-author of the device's study, explained that this technology aims to address challenges many parents face in knowing how much their baby is feeding. The device could also have applications for premature infants or babies in neonatal intensive care units, where precise monitoring of milk intake is often necessary.

The team is currently seeking regulatory clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration. The approval process may take up to several years before the device becomes available for home use.
